Additional Information

Tim helped us transform our neglected Marina-style family home from an ugly duckling on the block with 'good bones' to the awesome space we now call home. We tore up the house in two phases keeping the same exterior and some original features (oak floors, decorative plasterwork). With Tim's design input, we created a modern, open plan living space while still living in the house and expecting our first child during phase two of the project. It could have been a recipe for disaster but Tim (and his crew) were professional, flexible, and pleasant to work with throughout the process. We trusted Tim from the beginning and the trust only grew through the project. He is exactly what you see professionally and personally - honest, hard working and somebody who takes great pride in his craft. Since completing phase one in 2011 and phase two earlier this year, we have never had to call him back to fix anything. This is because he made sure it was done right the first time around. We love our new indoor and outdoor space. It's much more functional for our growing family and we only have Tim to thank for it.

This was the first time we embarked on a house remodel and we took it very seriously. We interviewed several architects and construction companies before selecting the ones to do the work. Like anyone thinking of remodeling, we had heard a litany of horror stories about time and cost overruns and horrible relations with contractors. But something about both our architect and Tim at San Francisco Design and Construction gave us that good gut feeling and we went for it. So I'll say this, go with your gut. From the moment you meet Tim he puts you at ease with his zen-like attitude. He is no nonsense and easy to work with on the day to day business at hand, as well as dealing with the obstacles that arise. He worked seamlessly with our architect, where everyone kept their egos in check. Tim and all of his workers, subs, etc. did a wonderful job on the remodel and each and every one of them took pride and care with their work. Tim's relationships with his subs (electrical, painting, plumbing, etc) are well-established and made the project go smoothly and efficiently. Tim generally takes one job at a time, which means he remains on site for all the work, which is another reason the remodel went along with very few problems. Not only is he on site as the GC he uses his skills as a finish carpenter to do top notch work himself. He is a hands-on GC, which removes a layer of service providers and allows him to work at very reasonable prices. The real kudos are that the project actually came in on time and on budget. None of our friends believe that, but it is true.
We are happily back in our home and get endless compliments on its beauty and craftsmanship. All this is a testament to Tim's work ethic.

We hired Tim to rebuild the sunroom, connect two balconies, build a new roof deck, and replace all siding and windows. From the first visit, Tim made an impression of a very knowledgeable, experienced, trustworthy, no-nonsense professional. We felt very comfortable trusting him with the job. When the existing siding was removed, turned out that the house had extensive dry rot damage. This turned an already large project into an even bigger one. Tim promptly came up with a plan to handle unexpected existing conditions, worked with an engineer to address structural issues, pulled in additional resources to perform the work. He was on the site every day. He took time to patiently answer and follow up on every question. Most importantly, his calming presence made us feel at ease and confident that things were under control. All subcontractors Tim brought - plumber, electrician, roofer, drywall, painter, etc. - were top-notch. Now that the project is done, we feel even stronger than in the beginning that Tim is a true professional. We are very happy we have found Tim and highly recommend him. It is great to have Tim on your team!

As an architect, it's important to me that the contractor be faithful to the concerns of our clients. That means he/she should respect the budget, schedule, and design vision for the project at hand, treat everyone with respect, and be highly willing to redress errors and fix problems that arise during construction. Tim at San Francisco Design and Construction met all those requirements hands down. You can read the owner's review about schedule and budget, but I'll add this: problems usually arise during most construction projects. Tim met those problems head-on by either requiring that sub-contractors re-build certain work, or by removing and re-doing work himself. In the case of a misunderstanding that had to do with the structural drawings, all parties were willing to contribute financially to the solution and all believed that the outcome was fair. As for the design vision, Tim worked carefully from the drawings and checked in with us regularly with questions. So he had the will to carry out the design... but did he have the skill? YES! He is a carpenter at heart -- he used to be a cabinet-maker -- so he can build clean modern detailing, and can get his subcontractors to do the same. (It is actually much harder to build a trim-less window than one with all those fancy casings around it, and Tim was up to the challenge for all the trim-less detailing in our project). I enjoyed my interactions with Tim throughout the project and even beyond project completion, and am eagerly looking forward to the next project on which I'll be able to work with Tim.
